2008 "Case of The Year" Submissions

     The following cases were submitted by Master Police Officer Bryant Arrington of the Manassas City Police Department in consideration for the 2008 "Case Of The Year" Award. These are ordered by the case occurrence date. Some of the cases may have had names or addresses removed to protect identities for cases that have not been resolved through the court system. All suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. These cases are from official reports submitted by the officer for cases that meet the criteria for the 2008 "Case Of The Year".


Armed Robbery

         On Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 2:37 am Officers responded to the 7-11 store 8402 Digges Road for an Armed Robbery.
         The victim, a 40 year old female employee, reported a Hispanic male entered the store displaying a handgun demanding money. As the clerk was removing money from the register and handing it to the offender, a male customer came into the store. The robber confronted the customer by pointing the pistol at him then began to drag him around the counter. At this point the customer struck the offender in the face with his fist knocking him to the ground. He then wrestled the gun away by the robber. The robber ran out of the store heading toward Rolling Road.
         K9 Officer Arrington and his K9 Smoke ran a track that lead officers from the 7-11 store to a residence located at 8425 Sunset Drive where the Robbery suspect was located inside the house.
         Jose Alberto Miranda Aguilar (aka Jose Ramos), 18, of 8425 Sunset Drive was arrested without incident and charged with Robbery, Abduction, Wearing Mask in a Public Place, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony and Brandishing.
         Through further investigation it was determined that Aguilar was also responsible for committing Armed Robberies of the CITCO gas station located at 8536 Sudley Road on May 7, 2008 and on May 17, 2008.
         Aguilar was held without bond at the Prince William Adult Detention Center pending a court date of June 26, 2008.

    Armed Robbery

         Friday November 14, 2008 at 10:52 am a man went into Provident Bank at 10175 Hastings Drive and placed a duffel bag on the counter in front of a teller, implied that he had a gun and demanded money.
         The Teller said that when she gave the man an undisclosed amount of money, he ran out of the bank towards Dumfries Road. Police responded and set up a perimeter. A perimeter unit found the duffel bag with the stolen money not far from the bank.
         K9 was requested by the duty Supervisor and MPO Arrington and K9 Smoke responded and met with perimeter units who found the duffel bag. MPO Arrington and K9 Smoke began a track from where the money was recovered across Dumfries Road and into a wooded area, from the wooded area they continued the track to an apartment complex at Hastings Drive and 7th Regiment.
         The suspect was hiding in an apartment looking out a window waiting for Patrol unit to leave the area, when he observed the K9 Team coming towards his apartment. The suspect later confessed to Patrol Officers that he knew he was going to get caught and decided to come out of the apartment and surrender to police.
         Ijaz William, 30 with no fixed address was taken into custody and charged with two counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery.
         Information was given to K9 that the suspect dropped his weapon in the woods. K9 searched the woods for approximately 90 minutes advising Patrol that there is not a gun in the woods. A search warrant was obtained for the residence and the gun was located in a trash container within the apartment.
