2009 "Case of The Year" Submission
The following case was submitted by Officer Mario Lugo of the Manassas Park Police Department in consideration for the 2009 "Case Of The Year" Award. These are ordered by the case occurrence date. Some of the cases may have had names or addresses removed to protect identities for cases that have not been resolved through the court system. All suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. These cases are from official reports submitted by the officer for cases that meet the criteria for the 2009 "Case Of The Year".
Narcotics Search Warrant

Location: DEA/ATF Search Warrant
DEA and ATF requested K9 to assist during a narcotics search warrant, upon arrival DEA Supervisor Randy Benavente requested K9 to conduct a drug search of the residence. K9 BRUTUS was utilized and K9 BRUTUS indicated and alerted on a black file cabinet located in the basement office area. K9 BRUTUS also detected and indicated on a stack of boxes located in a closet in the basement area. DEA Supervisor also requested K9 to conduct a vehicle scan and K9 BRUTUS again indicated and alerted in the interior rear area (near center console) of the vehicle. K9 Officer Lugo advised the DEA Supervisor and Detective Avery of the area’s K9 indicated and alerted.
Detective Avery advised they located/seized approximately one pound of high grade marijuana in the black file cabinet, a 1/8 of an ounce of marijuana and approximately $95,000 in cash located inside a safe located inside a closet.
