Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Handler Senior Deputy Richard Lloyd and canine “Fritz” track down armed robbery suspects in the East End.
A cab driver for Virginia Cab Company was held at gunpoint on Wakeman Drive by a group of six suspects. The one of the suspects brandished the handgun and demanded money from the cab driver. The cab driver refused to give the suspects any money and they fled into a densely populated neighborhood. Several deputies arrived and a perimeter was set around the Breezewood area. Senior Deputy Lloyd responded to start a track with his K9 partner “Fritz”.
Fritz tracked from Wakeman Drive through some woods and along the rear of several townhouses on Dominion Drive. Deputies responded to assist with the perimeter and later assisted in securing the residence. Deputy Lloyd advised that Fritz ended near the rear door of a townhouse and units surrounded the residence.
Once units were in position around the townhouse they used the PA to order the occupants out of the residence and subsequently detained all six suspects. Consent was gained from the resident and the house was cleared. During the search of the residence the black semi-automatic handgun was located in the closet of the master bedroom on the 2nd floor. The weapon was later identified as a Walther pellet gun.
A Deputy drove the victim to the townhouse where a "show up" was conducted and the suspects were identified. Detectives responded and were given consent to search the residence and recovered the bandanas used during the robbery, as well as the phone used to dial the cab company.
Detectives obtained the following charges: armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and felony wearing a mask in public. All were turned over to the jail and held with no bond. Nine suspects were charged totaling fifteen felony charges.
