2010 "Case of The Year" Submission

     The following case was submitted by Lieutenant Mario Lugo of the Manassas Park Police Department in consideration for the 2010 "Case Of The Year" Award. These are ordered by the case occurrence date. Some of the cases may have had names or addresses removed to protect identities for cases that have not been resolved through the court system. All suspects are presumed innocent until convicted in a court of law. These cases are from official reports submitted by the officer for cases that meet the criteria for the 2010 "Case Of The Year".


Narcotics Search WarrantAward

     On October 25, 2010, Detective Loving and Detective McKinney with the Narcotics Task Force requested K9 to assist with a Narcotics Search Warrant. Detective McKinney advised the residence was secured and they located marijuana in plain view in the basement. K9 Brutus was deployed and listed below are the areas K9 Brutus DIA (Detected, Indicated and Alerted);

  • Basement Bedroom, night stand located to the right of the bed and luggage located in the closet.
  • Basement Family Room, a blue water cooler containing marijuana in plain view and the entertainment center.
  • Garage, black bag located inside a tool box.
  • Master Bedroom located upstairs, night stands and a dresser.
  • Bedroom located upstairs, chest and night stand.
  • Bedroom located upstairs, night stand.

     Detective McKinney was advised the areas K9 Brutus DIA and Detective McKinney also requested K9 to conduct free air sniff on two vehicles. The first vehicle was parked in front of the residence, a 2008 Mazda 4door white in color. K9 Brutus DIA on the trunk of the vehicle. On the 2nd vehicle a 2007 Chevy truck white in color was parked in the driveway, K9 Brutus DIA on the bed of the truck. K9 Brutus was then placed inside the vehicle and K9 Brutus detected/indicated behind the driver seat. Detective McKinney was advised of the areas K9 Brutus DIA and he located behind the driver seat of the truck, what appeared to be a hidden compartment.

     Detective McKinney advised the following items were seized from the residence;

  • 8lbs 4oz of marijuana from a blue cooler
  • Scale and packaging materials basement family room
  • A Taurus semi-auto pistol basement bedroom night stand
  • $680 from a safe located in the basement bedroom
  • $85 basement bedroom night stand
  • Packaging material containing marijuana residue upstairs bedroom chest
  • Packaging material that contained some type of plaster masking agent in the garage tool box
