K9 Track Reveals False Info

  • Handler: Deputy Myers
  • K9: K9 Loki
  • Agency: Orange County Sheriff's Office
  • Date: 07-25-11
  • Location: Red Hill Rd, Orange

On 07-25-2011 at 2250, there was a call on Red Hill Road for an assault that had just occurred. I was in the area of the bus garage so I also responded to assist the Town Units with locating the suspects. I began canvassing the neighborhood around were the assault had been thought to have taken place, when I received a call to go the intersection of Red Hill Road and East Main to conduct a K9 Track for the suspects.
On scene I was told by the Town Unit that the victim was unable to provide a route of escape by the 3 subjects. The only description that could be provided was 3 black males, one wearing grey sweat pants and a black shirt, also having lacerations to the face from the altercation. The Unit on scene also stated that he had not gone into the grass surrounding the area. I then observed that there were not any foot prints or tracks through the grass on either side of the roads. I was able to observe were I had just walked in the grass due to the dew on the top of the grass at the time.
I retrieved my K9 partner and cast him from the grassy corner of East Main Street in the direction of Red Hill Road. The K9 showed no indications of a track, but did travel west up the grassy hill following East Main Street. I then remembered that the Town Units had said that the suspects may have hid in one of the large trees or bushes along the street before assaulting the victim. I cast my K9 around several of the larger trees in the area, but again had no indications of a scent pool or scent. I then brought my K9 partner to the other side of Red Hill Road and cast him south to north in the grass but again found no track. I again tried the trees and bushes around the second area and could not locate a track. I advised the Town Units on scene of my findings and cleared the scene.
Due to my findings the Orange Police Department was able to question the victim as to the validity of his attack. Orange Police Department was able to obtain a true statement from the victim that the allegations were in fact false. Orange Police Department investigators were then able to obtain several warrants against the victim.
