Physical Apprehension
Handler: MPO Wright
K9: K9 Rocko
Agency: Harrisonburg Police Department
Date: 11-13-11
Location: City of Harrisonburg
On 11-13-2011, MPO Wright was called to assist the Harrisonburg Police Department's SWAT team with a warrant service. The suspect was wanted on a drug distribution charge and was a known criminal gang member who was believed to be armed. When officers had attempted warrant service, the suspect retreated inside a residence and was believed to have hidden in an attic based on loose insulation laying on a bedroom closet floor.
After numerous attempts of verbal contact with the suspect, MPO Wright carried K9 Rocko up a step ladder and deployed him in to the attic. MPO Wright directed K9 Rocko to search the attic, which was an "L" shaped area and covered with loose-fill insulation. K9 Rocko began searching, then disappeared around a corner. Moments later, the suspect began screaming after being engaged by the K9.
SWAT officers below were ready on the first floor, and after determining suspect's location, used long fire poles to make a hole in the ceiling drywall. SWAT officers grabbed the suspect, who was on his back actively fighting K9 Rocko, through the ceiling hole and pulled him down. The suspect was taken into custody and was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries.
