On 06-20-2011, K9 Officer Chris Ray was contacted by an off-duty Harrisonburg PD officer in reference to a possible drug violation that had just occurred in a local restaurant parking lot. As K9 Officer Ray arrived he observed the suspect vehicle to still be on location. K9 Officer Ray, while making contact with the driver, could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle's interior.
K9 Officer Ray then advised the driver that he was going to conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle with K9 Spartan. At this point the vehicle's passenger exited the vehicle and approached K9 Officer Ray and handed him a small baggie containing Marijuana. The passenger then stated that this was the only marijuana in the vehicle. K9 Officer Ray then ran K9 Spartan around the vehicle where K9 Spartan indicated and alerted to the vehicle's exterior.
K9 Officer Ray at this point conducted a hand search of the vehicle where he located 3 pounds of marijuana, 16 grams of methamphetamine, 1 gram of Ecstasy, and $38,103 dollars in cash.
