2012 IRON DOG COMPETITION

The Virginia Police Canine Association will be hosting the 12th Annual Iron Dog Competition at the Fauquier County Fairgrounds in Warrenton, VA. Canines and Handlers will compete in several categories such as article searches, agility, apprehension, narcotics or explosives searches, and many other evolutions.
K9 Teams will compete in a 1½ mile course containing multiple categories such as bite/don't bite, muzzle, firearms, narcotics/explosive searches, and many other evolutions. Each event station will be timed and the overall course completion will be timed. Awards are based on total points accrued for each event station, time for each station, and the overall course time.

Classes are 4-hours on Sundays. These are single-session classes, you only need to register for one date.
The goals of the Pet First Aid presentation are to teach participants how to be prepared for emergencies that involve a pet and how to protect themselves and the animal from further harm, injury, or suffering during emergencies. This is done by teaching prompt, effective first aid actions and care. Topics include managing urgent care situations, car accidents, wounds, electrical shock, and eye-foot-ear injuries.

URBAN PATROL DOG TRACKING SEMINAR

The Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office will be hosting an Urban Patrol Dog Tracking Seminar with an emphasis in scent specific tracking. The Seminar will be taught in Spotsylvania. The Seminar will be taught in conjunction with the Inter-National Bloodhound Training Institute. The seminar will be conducted from March 13-15, 2012. The Seminar fee includes a training manual.
Cost is $100 per student.

Stands for SWAT & K9's Interacting During Deployment School/CAnine Tactical School. For those that don't understand K9's or have a misconception as to how beneficial K9's can be during a high risk Patrol and SWAT deployment, SKIDDS / CATS is the answer. The goal of this 3-day course is to educate and train Patrol Officers, SWAT operators, and K9 handler on the deployment of a police dog in a high risk / tactical operation.
Participate in numerous K9 deployment scenarios. Learn the latest K9 tactical tracking, searching, deployment and arrest techniques from the K9 SWAT instructors of SKIDDS. Determine how your police dog functions and how they can be used to better assist you and your department. Train as a team under realistic conditions.

ADVANCED HIGHWAY CRIMINAL INTERDICTION
AND HIDDEN COMPARTMENT TRAINING

This course is provided by the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation, hosted by the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia Police Canine Association. Space is limited to 15 seats for VPCA Members. Seats must be reserved by using the forms provided below.

This 16-hour course for patrol officers focuses on basic to advanced highway criminal interdiction techniques. MIR hours will be received for participants in this course. Topics covered will include but are not limited to:
- How to recognize indicators of criminal activity before and after the traffic stop
- Roadside interview techniques for passenger and commercial vehicles
- Passenger and commercial vehicle search techniques
- Consent/probable cause searches and use of narcotic canines
- Natural void concealment
- Hidden compartment concealment
- Evidence collection, documentation, and report writing
- Post seizure controlled deliveries
- Asset forfeiture/bulk currency smuggling
- Legal considerations
- Biased free policing/racial profiling considerations
The first and second days of this program are primarily classroom instruction. The third day consists of both classroom and practical search exercises.
Participants should dress appropriately for outdoor work the third day and bring basic roadside search tools/equipment (flashlight, screwdriver, etc). Instructor will cover specifics during first two days of class.
